Six face shapes and the cuts that suit them

oval

A little longer than wide, with a soft jaw. Most cuts work, so choose by your hair type and how long you want to spend on it each day; short cuts and an open forehead show off your features.

round

About as long as wide, with a soft, rounded jaw. Some height at the crown and face-framing lines that fall below the chin make the face look longer; avoid heavy, rounded shapes that end at the chin.

square

About as long as wide, with a broad, defined jaw. Layers, soft waves and a side part soften the jaw; avoid blunt lines that stop right at the jawline.

long

Clearly longer than it is wide. Bangs and fullness at the sides shorten it; avoid lots of height on top with flat sides.

heart-shaped

A wider forehead and a narrower chin. Volume near the chin, such as chin-length or collarbone waves, balances it; side-swept or wispy bangs soften the forehead.

diamond

Widest at the cheekbones, with a narrower forehead and chin. Add fullness at the forehead and the chin, such as bangs and layers near the jaw; avoid styles flat at the sides that puff out at the cheekbones.

How it is measured

It compares your face length with your cheekbone width, and your jaw and forehead with your cheekbones, the same measurement our hair and look advisor uses. A face near the line between two shapes can read either way, so treat it as a guide; your hair type matters as much as your face shape.
